Shrewsbury House School
MCS designed and built a new colonnaded sports pavilion with changing rooms and learning space adjacent to Chessington World of Adventures, in Chessington on behalf of Shrewsbury House School.
This project marked the sixth collaboration with the School Trust, initiated through a preconstruction services agreement. This approach, focused on early planning and collaboration, eventually led to the formal main contract for the project.
The design and build (D&B) project required submitting a new planning application, as well as designing and constructing a thermally efficient building using a Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) framework. The building was designed to meet local planning policies by achieving a 35% reduction in carbon emissions.
The exterior of the building features sustainable Western Red Cedar cladding from a certified source, while the double-glazed windows use solar control and thermal-efficient glass. The design also includes roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) panels, underfloor heating, and energy-saving LED lighting throughout.
The building operates entirely on electricity and is heated by highly efficient air source heat pumps. Electric vehicle charging stations were also integrated into the design, anticipating the future of sustainable school transport.
Given the site’s sensitive location, extensive ecological surveys and mitigation measures were necessary to protect the local habitat. In line with promoting biodiversity, large wildflower areas were planted, and bat boxes were installed to support local wildlife.
"Both project and site management has been of a high standard with Health, Safety & Security clearly a priority. I would not hesitate in recommending them for future projects."
