The extensive refurbishment of Surrey County Council's former Debenhams store, located on Winchester’s bustling High Street, is nearing completion, and new retailers are preparing to open their doors just in time to welcome hungry customers for the festive season.
Last Friday, a select group of construction professionals, including Toby Wincer, Ross Galtress, Jamie Willmer and Dexter Bollhalder from OB Architecture, had the opportunity to tour the building guided by MCS’s Managing Director, Justin Whiteman. The tour highlighted the fascinating history of the 50,408 sq. ft. building, which has undergone numerous extensions and transformations over the last 150 years.
The project has involved a complete overhaul of the building, starting with the full interior and roof strip-out, including the removal of asbestos, and the dismantling of outdated mechanical and electrical systems. The building’s refurbishment continues today with only a few final touches left before completion
This transformation has brought new life to a building that has played a significant role in Winchester’s retail landscape for generations. The building’s revitalisation not only preserves a piece of Winchester's architectural heritage but also reinforces the High Street’s standing as a premium retail and dining destination.
