Refurbishing Former Debenhams Building

MCS has been appointed by Surrey County Council to refurbish 12-15 High Street, Winchester, which is a 50,408 sq. ft. department store once occupied by Debenhams.

The store closed in 2021, following the national chain’s financial collapse, and will now be refurbished and divided into three separate retail units. The units are situated on a prime High Street location opposite M&S, close to Rick Stein and Pitcher & Piano, which has a high footfall and is close to Winchester Cathedral.

These refurbishment works will involve the removal of asbestos, full building strip-out of all internal and roof mounted fixtures and fittings, M&E plant and equipment, and all other items in the building to return it back to an empty shell.

MCS will then carry out the repair and refurbishment to the existing timber and to multiple flat and pitch roofs including the replacement of insulation and waterproofing layers. Other external works including repointing, decoration to cast iron downpipes, render repairs and timber works will also be completed.

These works are to commence in Autumn 2023.
